A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
Date: Beltaine | 44th day of Bláthanna| 1722 ATA
Time of Day: Early afternoon
Weather: Cloudy and misty with a mountain chill in the air
Location: Kernow, Highmist Mountain foothills (on the Misty Hills side of the mountains)
---

Nathair was leading the troupe of Seren, Aedan, Abbey, and the children up farther into the Highmist mountains. He was riding on Bryn, going at a slow trot up the side of one of the large foothills. Pretty young white aspen trees populated the foothills, with light green leaves and black-speckled white bark. Up higher, the woods got thicker, with older aspens creating a forest. The mountains tower above the troupe, a dark green forested peak capped in purple and white mists.

The group was going on a family camping trip, and Nathair had been invited. He had packed his typical green and brown tunics, the leather vest he always wore, and his hide boots. His horse, Bryn, was saddled with the usual simple saddle and a green horseblanket. She had some saddlebags strung on behind Nathair, holding camping supplies, dried food, and fishing equipment for the mountain streams. Nathair loved camping and was prepared for several days of fun.

Bryn could eat up the hills with her long legs, and so Nathair was ahead of the group a little ways. He patted Bryn's beautiful neck, and leaned down to whisper some words into her ears. Then, slowing her down, Nathair turned to look behind him at his friends and their kids. When Nathair was a child, he would often prank his friends; as he got older this tendency faded.. but never really vanished. He started forming an illusion in his mind, a stately raven. Then, projecting it, the bird flew in from the north, and Nathair had it dive at Aedan playfully, just missing the man's head.

Should any of the others have looked his way in suspicion, Nathair was the obvious culprit, grinning from ear-to-ear in a fashion that's rare for him. A playful, teasing happiness is lighting up his eyes, one that used to always be there when Nathair was a child. This camping trip was one of childhood memories, as well as a rare break from the work the four adults typically immersed themselves in.

RE: A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
The idea of a camping trip after having returned from Cathair Ceochan, was definitely a good one in Seren's opinion, and seeing that Nathair was also around home and not trading somewhere meant they could invite their longtime friend along as well. Whilst it tended to go unspoken, there had seemed to be a little distance or tension that had grown over the past years -- mostly since the first of she and Aedan's children were born, and Seren had been trying to bridge it for a while. Sometimes there seemed to be progress, and sometimes less so. But it was difficult not to notice the general relaxed air that surrounded the group as they rode their horses into the Highmists.

Rozenwyn and Taliesin, who rode their own horses in front of their parents and behind Abbey and Nathair, were especially excited, since they'd never been quite this far into the mountains before, and the mother couldn't help but watch them fondly as they spoke about all the fun things they were going to do and find and such while exploring. Even Nathair was in a good mood, and it showed in the prank he pulled on Aedan, which Seren deduced rather quickly as she glanced ahead and caught the man's mischievous grin.

"Looks like a challenge there, heart," The woman chuckled lightly as she sidled up to Aedan's horse on her own and leaned over to speak quietly before reaching over to clasp his hand and give it a small squeeze as she gave him a warm smile. She'd enjoyed spending the past few weeks together, and looked forward to an enjoyable family outing in the mountains.

"Do you think we'll find any monsters?" Taliesin spoke up as he glanced around at the adults, clearly excited after some conversation he and his sister must have been having on the subject. "Maybe we can catch one and bring it home and show Gramma!" He grinned, boastfully deciding that he would be able to do such a feat.

"She'd mostly interested in having a Lake Monster," Rozenwyn corrected him with a smirk, though she became thoughtful for a moment before continuing, "But maybe we could find a river or stream beast to catch first, and then try something much bigger like a Lake Monster next time we visit Grampa." She nodded rather matter-of-factly, a bright grin on her own features while their mother watched the two of them with amusement.

"I could think of something else I'd rather be doing in the river, personally," Seren murmured under her breath, barely loud enough for Aedan to hear her before she cast him a cheeky grin.

RE: A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
Abbey was riding easy as she kept up with Nathair - not side by side, of course, but closer than the others, though she kept her horse back a bit, keeping closer to the children in case anything went badly. It had been a nice outing, so far - a pleasant change from the stress of earlier in the month, and it was nice to see Nathair again, and, while she and Aedan usually 'camped out' often enough on the road, it would be fun to do so with Seren and the kids, along with Nathair... it had been too long since they'd done something like this, together.

It had been some time since he'd been so relaxed with them, after all, and it was good to see - perhaps he was finally starting to work through his own problems... she hoped he was, in any case, and as the children started to speak, she let out a low chuckle.

"Oh, I'm sure we can find some kind of monster for you, now can't we, brother? Perhaps a snaggle-toothed bandersnatch?"

RE: A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
Aedan was in high spirits, throwing Seren occasional quick, broad smiles as they rode, as he usually did, though his attention was on their surroundings, as well, keeping watch for any potential threat to come their way - hardly expecting any to come from their companions.

His reaction to the raven was swift and startled, as he pulled his knife to offer the beast a swipe, brow furrowing as the blade passed through. His gaze twisted forwards, his intention to give his sibling an angry scolding up until the point he noticed Nathair's mischevious grin.

Truly, this was a declaration of war.

He glanced at Seren, jade eyes sole, and murmurs back, squeezing his hand. "One I'm going to pay back in full, I promise."

He'd have to think of something clever to do in return, and his expression drops to a mostly neutral one, though his features twist into a faint frown... before he grinned right back as his sister spoke, and chuckled, low in his throat. "Oh. Yes, it's been quite awhile since we saw one of those, hasn't it been? Nasty beasts,.. Nathair, you remember the one we caught, back when we were in our thirties? Big nasty beast with purple fur?"

The twins were, by and large, quite good at bluffing, particularly when it came to entertaining the children...though his attention swiftly snaps back to Seren as a truly embarassing smile spreads across his face, and he sidles his horse over, and winks, murmuring back. "Oh really?"

Nathair grinned even wider upon seeing his success. Getting the better of Aedan, his long-time friend and rival, was always something to smile about. Not even the love in the air between Aedan and Seren could spoil his mood, and he let the bitterness in his heart go... for now. Today was no time to be brooding over things that could only ruin his happiness.

"Ahh, yes! That was a bandersnatch? I had it confused with a fat Flidais using a poorly-planned body charm" says Nathair, acting out his role. There is a twinkle in his eye. He was used to playing along with a bluff that one or both of the twins initiated; although Abbey was typically his partner, Aedan was just as well-versed. Entertaining children was not something that Nathair did often, due to a combination of his travelling and his subtle dislike of the reminder they presented. Having none of his own, Nathair had yet to appreciate the beauty of a child's mind. Nevertheless, he enjoyed the banter.

As Abbey drew nearer to the slowed Nathair, Bryn whinnied fondly to Abbey's mount. The two horses were familiar with each other. Nathair planned to hang back now, to tell the story with Aedan and maybe scare or humor the children. Thus, he kept Bryn's pace equal to that of Abbey's mount. In the meantime, one raven became two, and kept it's flight... the illusion was only visible to the group, however.

RE: A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
Amusement crossed the features of the Ua Lugh woman as she listened to the other three speaking of things to get the children wound up. It was certainly working on Taliesin who was looking between each othe adults as they spoke with wide eyed excitement. Rozenwyn's interest was mild by comparison, but still there and even a hint of a giggle was pulled from the girl as Nathair compared the creature the twins were talking about to a fat Flidais.

"Do you really think we'll see one?" Tal glanced around, though ultimately his gaze ended up on his mother, who hadn't joined in on the joke yet, as though to confirm with her that it actually could be real. Rozenwyn carried a small smirk, the girl a bit more aware of the adults' nuances, though clearly unlikely to let her brother in on her knowledge.

"Oh aye, but I think I'd be less worried about them, and more concerned about the Mist Children," Seren's countenance carried a somewhat more serious undertone to it, the woman sounding positively grim as she picked out something from one of the old tales her mother used to tell. "Phantoms that come out on especially misty nights. They appear as children, and are said to be the ghosts of missing young'uns who passed away but never made it into the otherworld, so they roam around looking for new friends to play with forever and ever. Whisk kids out o' their own beds to lure them to their death, especially the mischievous ones, and turn them into creatures just like 'em." Taliesin was staring at her, and Rozen looked as though she was trying to work out whether her mother was serious or not.

"Don't worry, Rozen! I'll make sure they don't get us!" The younger sibling declared, though even he sounded a little less confident than usual in his ability to make sure nothing happened to his sister. Seren's demeanour didn't change though, the woman able to maintain a completely serious look as though she was truly warning her children against doing something that she believed was dangerous.

As Aedan sidled up to her though, she couldn't help but give him a devious smirk as she leaned over to reach for his face and pull his lips to hers to steal a brief kiss. "I was just thinking that I miss sneaking out for late night swimming together, is all," The woman whispered to her lover as she offered a sly wink, "Perhaps after the children are asleep? Relive some fond memories, hmm?"

RE: A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
"Of course it wasn't a Flidais! I'd say even they aren't half as ugly as a bandersnatch." Aedan smirked, rolled his eyes, voice turning more than a little boastful as he straightened up further in his saddle. "Besides, if it was a Flidais it would have run from us, cowardly creatures that many of them are. Bandersnatch aren't half so easy to scare!"

His attention moved back to Seren, and he listened to her tale with rapt attention, before slowly nodding, as he remembered her mother's storytelling, his own smirk fading into a more solemn expression...remembering curling up with Abbey when they first started travelling alone, both more than a little spooked after a rather stupid decision to tell scary stories over firelight in the middle of a remote patch of woodland. "...yes, much more dangerous than a bandersnatch."

He turned his attention to the children, at this, and smiled again - still endlessly proud of his children, particularly his son's dead-set determination to help protect his sister...even when he was scared. They'd make one hell of a dangerous pair, when they were older, he was sure of it... though his thoughts were quickly derailed by Seren, and he made a move to chase her for another quick kiss, before quickly correcting his seating to make sure he didn't unbalance himself and end up off his horse. "...that was always fun..."

He reached out a hand to catch hers, and play with her fingers, whispering back with a wide smirk. "Mmm, depends, we are leaving Abbey and Nathair behind, if we do, right?"

RE: A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
Abbey patted the side of her steed, idly, as the horse returned Bryn's greeting, her attention turning to the breeze, for a moment, carrying sounds from the area around them with a careful application of her draiocht, and letting the boys take and carry the joke without any more of her own input, smiling slightly at the reaction it pulled from the children.

"It's always a good idea to stay close, when the fog rolls up - this high on the mountain, it's rarely natural. A sure sign of Mistfolk in the area... mountain valleys are the worst for it, though, sometimes the mist doesn't fade for days..."

Her gaze turned to Nathair, as she quickly dropped her draiocht use, not interested in pulling any of the murmurs from the lovers to her ears, and raised her chin, gesturing towards the mountain. "About how much further are we headed, do you think?"

A third bird rises into the sky, joining the other two, one of a warm, reddish hue, and flies in slow, swooping circles around the others - this one visible only to the group, as well...

RE: A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
Nathair's expression took on a very serious tone when Seren began speaking about the mist children. His own father had threatened to take him to be fed to the mists when he was child for bad behavior, and so he was well aquainted with the fable. Still, he was in a great mood.. maybe he could pull off one more prank?

Nathair summoned one more illusion, in the far off woods. A mist, deeper in, that looked quite natural.. until it took the shape of children stepping between trees. He let it quickly fade away, though, so that if anyone spotted it (off to the left) they likely would have wondered if they had even seen it.

Then he looked at Abbey as she addressed him. He looked ahead at the forest in front of him in order to give her an answer. The wooded path was leading even higher, and Tall oaks were joining the Aspens. The sound of running water could be heard, and off to the far right a fern'd stream was flowing. A cliff could be seen through the oaks and aspens, and boulders litter many of the spaces between the trees. Nathair looks forward and to the right a bit, spotting the area near the camp: they were close. "It's not far now, the camp is just ahead through that thick patch of oaks. See that Gnarly oak next to the cliff face? It's just past there." He points to a place where the cliff face juts out, making a small wall.

Nathair doesn't notice the new addition to his two-bird flock. He's too busy focusing on Abbey in an effort to ignore the lovey-doveyness of his other two friends to look up. In that effort, he wondered about having his own children... and his gaze lingers on Abbey's face a bit longer than usual. Still, the lust didn't last. It was normal though, as Seren had always claimed his heart. He knew he would be happier if he could just move on... but... Nathair looked forward and blinked furiously, as if trying to clear his mind the same way he cleared his vision. He was happy NOW, and that was all that mattered.

RE: A Curious Camping Trip [Seren, The Twins]
It was solemn expressions all round from the adults with the topic of Mistfolk, though Seren still remembered the way her mother used to tell stories -- Aithne had always been a talented weaver of tales, but then what could one expect with the father she had; the man of many talents. There had been many nights that the group of four had been kept awake because they'd foolishly asked her mother for another of her scary travelling tales or ghost stories.

Seren amused herself with a brief idea that came to mind as she saw the small wisp of something seemingly mist-like in the trees, which had also caught the eye of her son who'd instantly jumped and pointed, "What was that? I saw something!" The woman managed to keep from smirking easily enough as Rozenwyn assured Taliesin that it wasn't night time... yet.

"Mhmm, well someone has to watch over the sleeping little'uns," Smiling at her beloved, Seren lifted his hand to her lips and brushed them over his fingers gently, as well as a little teasingly, "I'm sure we can wrangle our way apart from the others for a short while, mnh?" After all, it would be completely understandable that the couple might like to spend a little alone time for a short bit, and it had been a very long time since they'd gone on such a companionable and relaxed trip together that didn't involve being in some place or another in a hurry.

Abbey's question and Nathair's response were caught by Seren's sharp hearing as well though, and she glanced ahead toward where the ssmall clearing would appear. She thought on the earlier story of hers once more and the idea of trickery, though was well aware that the men would be rather preoccupied with trying to one-up each other since Nathair had started with his small prank. That left things up to the women, and she called ahead.

"Say, Abbey, perhaps we should do the search for firewood when we arrive, eh? Let the men to take care of setting up the shelters and such. Sound fair?" The woman raised a brow in inquiry as she asked, it was hardly an unreasonable idea, after all, especially since Seren would be able to get help finding where the best dry wood was.

"Can I come too, Mama?" Rozen asked, glancing back at her mother with an innocent look, though Seren was sure that she saw something else that lent to knowledge in the girl's eyes. "I can help find wood too." She smiled lightly and Seren chuckled and nodded.

"Of course, girls will find the wood, and boys will take care of the camp... That means I'm relying on you to keep the others in line, Tal," Seren joked lightly, though received a grin and nod from her son which made her chuckle. It was more likely that he would join in on their games and whatnot without the supervision of his mother or aunt around.
