Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
Date: Beltaine | 22nd of Bláthanna | 1722 ATA |
Time of Day: Early afternoon
Weather: Warm, mild breeze
Location: Raven Compound
---

The woman had sent word ahead a few days ago to about four of the Great Clann Compounds, as well as the head of a certain gang, that she would be arriving in the City of Mists today, and was bringing her children with her. It seemed like a lot of people to inform, but then when so many of them had busy lives, one really couldn't be too careful in giving warning. The entourage, which consisted of a number of Elk guards, the daughter of the Elk Chieftain, the father of her children and his twin sister, and the two little sprites themselves, had arrived that morning, and had stopped by the Elk Compound first.

Naturally, Aithne had been ecstatic to see the little ones and had spent the morning entertaining them and vice-versa, until the children had fallen asleep for a couple of hours, worn out from the journey and excitement. The adults then spent some time catching up while Seren sent messengers around to find out when she could come by some of the other places. She was rather happy to hear that her father would be available in the afternoon, even if Aedan seemed just a little nervous.

Seren had spent a good amount of time trying to work out what it was that her mother was being tight-lipped about -- the woman had seemed different from the last time they spoke, but wasn't giving anything away. Her daughter had a feeling it maybe had something to do with her father or Cathasach though, since she'd heard some stories from staff about impromptu visits from both men.

Well... she'd find out sooner or later.

Once the children had woken and had a little something to eat, Seren gathered them as well as the twins and a few other people for extra protection (more for the children's sake than the other three), and the group headed to the Raven Compound.

That was where they were now. Arriving at the gate, Seren was granted access and led her family to the house her father resided in. They were escorted inside and Seren couldn't help but chuckle at the way Taliesin stared around him at the warriors, especially the ones with the larger weapons. Rozenwyn was also looking around, but she was studying the environment and taking in as much detail as possible. The children were attached to a parent each by the hand, divided by girls and boys, as the group was led along.

"Do you think he will like us?" Rozenwyn asked curiously with a hint of wariness, and Seren glanced down at her daughter, a brow raised at the girl with the hair that shone both golden and red, practically like a real fire, and intense golden eyes. She was about to reassure her, when Taliesin piped up.

"Of course he will! Ravens like warriors and we're the best out of all our friends!" The boy with the light, almost glowing, gold hair and green eyes was very sure of that fact, and Seren couldn't help a small chuckle as she then glanced up at Aedan fondly and moved closed to nudge him lightly to try and reassure her lover that this was going to be alright. She glanced across at Abbey with raised brows as though to say 'well, here goes'.

RE: Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
The night before, once the children had fallen asleep, had been somewhat of a production, for Áedán had, upon realizing how close they were to the city, found himself wracked by an onset of nerves - he had, after all, done his best to avoid falling under the sights of Seren's father, and was rather nervous about the prospect. ( He'd tried to argue that he and Abbey didn't need to come see Niall with their beloved princess, but some arguments were meant to be lost. ) Combined with his nerves and the fact that he'd been dragged off and attired in a far more appropriate manner for meeting a Chieftain than his usual attire, and, all in all, the smuggler was dealing with a rather severe case of nerves.

( True, both he and his sister had stowed anything even remotely illegal away, in the hands of their mother, but it did little to dampen the more than natural fear the man felt towards Niall Ó Mórrígan-Mór - he was, after all, the Raven Chieftain, a well-known warrior, and Seren's Father... Even if he wasn't a smuggler, those three things together would have left him worried all the same. )

In fact, there were only two things that kept him from bolting the moment they reached the gate's of the man's estate: one, the worry that if they saw he feared their grandfather, that the children might feel concern as to his intentions towards their father... and, second, the vicegrip his lover had on the hand not holding onto his son's.

His worry was mostly kept from being too visible - a certain tightness to the corners of his mouth, the occasional worried flick of his eyes, and the paler pallor to his skin than usual all tips, but not ones that were overly noticeable. He studied the interior of the building with much the same curiousity as his son, though he made sure to keep the boy close to his side. He glanced towards Seren as she nudged his side, smiled tightly. "I'm sure he's just as excited to meet the two of you as you are to meet him."

Áedán's voice doesn't hold any of the worry he feels - he's rather certain he's got this one right, after all.

RE: Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
Calming Áedán had been quite the worrysome task, when it got down to it - Abbey had pulled him aside, while Aithne and Seren had been talking, smiling and explaining that she wanted to make sure the both of them were presentable, had hauled him off and pushed fresh clothes into his arms, hissed and argued all the while... About the danger, about the ways things could go wrong, about the ways things could go right. She had, in time, coaxed him down once more, and with Seren at his side, there was no way he would be able to make a run for it.

( Besides, there was no guarantee running wouldn't set some bow-happy archer off and end with her twin having an arrow in his back or through his throat. Not good at all. Best to avoid the possibility. )

The elder of the twins was, in fact, far more at ease than her brother, as they entered the complex, her motions loose and easy, while her eyes were ever-moving, drinking in all the detail she could - which warrior bore which weapon, the number of doors and distance between them, how many halls they passed... True, it was unlikely they would face ambush in the very home of the Raven Chieftain, but it was worth the cautious automatic evaluation, in her mind - no better way to avoid trouble than to calculate how to make up for the potential for it.

No Ironmen or women walked with them, not to the Raven Compound - to Fox, perhaps, to Elk, of course, absolutely to their mother's home ( well, her mother's inn, Deidre's lodgings far grander and greater suited to host the numbers required than their own mother's small abode ) - but never to the Raven. Their existance so close to his daughter, she was sure, was enough 'imposition' or threat, with his position on the illegal trade of iron clear as it was. Complicating the matter further than it had to be would have been far more unwise than any of them were foolish enough to be.

She smiled, at her neice and nephew as Rozenwyn voiced her concerns and Taliesin issued his retort, her own attitude far more relaxed in the presence of her fellow clannsmen than her twin's, and grinned at Seren's glance. "This should be interesting."

RE: Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
A storm was coming. That was how he felt as he looked out from his rooms. Morning within the compound of the Raven Clann had not begun well. In fact he was in an especially dour mood that morning as the day progressed even he had wanted to kill a few people. It was Imbolc near the end in Breith. Spring was upon them and he had just met with the Flaith of the Septs after summoning them to deal with ongoing issues of the Clann. After sitting down the four chiefs (the Morrigan maintained a Flaith in case the Taoiseach was slain and the Tanaiste nearby) and spoke to them. Per usual the Badb had began making demands for more resources to expand their training camps. The Nemain had pushed for the right to declare war on the border with the Wolves, and the Macha had complained about their plants. The Morrigan chief had remained quiet and then spoken to Niall after the meeting.

"The Raven wish for war Niall Taoiseach, we are the War Children. Your dallying with the Suns and the Foxes is causing them be filled with wrath," his cousin Caitria said to him as they walked side by side out of the meeting room.

"I know cousin, I shall see what the future holds. Now I must meet my grand children and decide if my Fine grows this day," he told her as the woman left to attend to her personal estates. The wait gave him time to get some lunch and then get in a few practice bouts with the short spear. The entire fact that his daughter was actually visiting for once. He glanced out the window and watched his other children practicing. His top trainee, Derdriu. Her dark hair, and eyes were from her mother along with the feather nature of her hair.

The cadre of painted warriors that attended Derdriu stood along the walk way to the entrance hall. He turned and walked down the stairs and to the great oaken doors that sat at the front. As he made his way down the open stair way he heard the usual mark of his passing. BANG BANG. The guards within the mansion began to stamp the butt of their spears against the ground. As the sound grew the warriors outside practicing stopped as they looked at the door.

"FIACH FIACH FIACH!" they chanted loudly as the doors opened and Niall walked forward. Derdriu looked up at her father and held the long bladed Falx she was practicing with away from her and planted it in the ground.

"Interest," she said as she looked over at the warriors who had been training with her. The chanting usually marked her father's exit and was a bit overrated. However, the Morrigan liked to note his passing for some reason. A pair of lads came around as Niall walked down the steps of the opening of the mansion and sat there. Golden eyes watched their father as Niall's oldest sons Trys and Llewyn waited to meet their sister.

RE: Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
The group with their Elk entourage were escorted in the direction where they would find Seren's father. She wasn't entirely sure what to expect; honestly, she just wanted her children to meet their grandfather. With them living in the Misty Hills and the Raven Chieftain busy with his business, there had not really been much opportunity. There was also the concern over whether he simply did not want to meet them. She wanted to believe that was not the case, but this day would let her know whether or not he played much of a role in the lives of her dear little ones.

Chanting could be heard from nearby the mansion they were approaching, signalling that someone -- probably her father -- was exiting. Sure enough, as they rounded a corner and more was visible, Seren could see him sitting on the steps while a number of other people were scattered around. Some had paused in training and others seemed to just be waiting. Seren glanced at Áedán, sensing his tension, and she squeezed his hand before releasing it and hooking her arm with his so that they had closer contact while they walked the rest of the way. She didn't want him to be afraid, but could understand why he would be; there were a lot of logical reasons for it.

"It will be alright," Seren spoke quietly to her lover as they neared, before she then slowed down and gestured for Rozenwyn to take his hand while Seren gently released him so that she could make the last few steps ahead of the group. Her green eyes -- almost a replica of her Raven King father's -- shone with warmth and intelligence as she approached the man seated on the stairs, and she stopped not far from him before making a sweeping bow.

"Greetings Athair," Straightening, Seren grinned almost cheshire-like, "It has been some time; I almost wondered if you had forgotten about me." She was speaking in jest and it could be easily heard in her voice. She turned slightly to gesture toward those of importance in her entourage, "I bring my family to meet you: my lover, Áedán Ó Nemain-Sleá, of which you should already be aware of; his twin, Abbey Uí Nemain-Sleá; and the children of Áedán and I, Rozenwyn Uí Lugh-Mór and Taliesin Ó Lugh-Mór." As she said each of the children's names, they showed their respect; Rozenwyn with a polite curtsey as she studied the Raven Chieftain with calm calculation in her golden eyes, and Taliesin with a bow before his green gaze returned to staring at the warriors with keen interest.

"Though..." Seren smiled warmly at her father again though as she stepped forward and opened her arms toward him with a raised brow and tilt of her head, "Is there no hug for the woman you used to sing to sleep when she was a little girl?"

RE: Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
Abbey strode, light and easy, alongside her lifelong companions, her brother and her best friend, keeping an eye on both of them at the same time as her eyes continued to sweep the area, drinking in as much detail as she could. She'd never come this close to the heart of the Chieftain's compound, and for good enough reason... Had never had the desire to do so, either, yet here she was...

It was an interesting chance, an opportunity, and she took in the details, comparing it to her mental map of her Father's Estate, her Auntie Aithne's, the little differences between them, the things that were the same. Her ears perked attentive at the sudden bang and chant, the repeated cry of "Fiach" that echoed out through the area, and she couldn't stifle her grin, faint and amused. Oh, logic could hold it's tongue, for the moment, this... This was an adventure, no matter how much nervousness her brother had with regards for it, and she could feel her heartbeat speed up all the more. Oh, it was grand, to finally push past that nervousness...her own nervousness with regard to the Raven Taioseach nowhere near as great as her brother's, far closer to the practical levels of her mother, tempered by her personal self-assurance that her own contacts provided some small buffer, whatever the true case was.

Her eyes examined Niall, swept the area, and flickered back to him as her name was mentioned, long enough for her to sweep herself down into a bow - her clothing a twin to her brother's, nothing to grab for skirts but the edge of a cloak, though one leg moves behind the other much like it would for a curtsey. She doesn't speak - not her place, not her father, and certainly not her Fine, though she counted Seren, Rozenwyn, and Taiiesin amongst it, official or not.

Her eyes examined the two men with the look of Morrigan and Flidais about them - who were they, why were they here, as well? Important or not? Important enough to be present, and... She studied their faces a moment, making quiet connections, moved on, examined the painted cadre, and then the woman with the Falx.

Now those.... those were interesting features, the paint on their faces... they pinged a memory, and a significant enough one, of avoiding painted warriors in Prydain, and she felt a fascinating stirring in her breast.

Oh, this is proving to be far more interesting a day than I dared to think it would be...

Áedán squeezed Seren's hand tighter, then hooked his arm tightly into hers, rested his hand on hers as they continued to walk. He stiffened, a bit, at the loud chanting, the thumping of the spears on the ground, eyes locking on the man on the steps after a quick sweep of the people around him. The nervousness is apparent in the set of his shoulders, in the quick, worried glance towards his lover, then back.

He took his daughter's hand, and squeezed it tight, nodded quick and quiet to Seren, and steeled himself. Whatever worry he had, he wasn't going to fuck this up, he had to do his best, for Seren, to prove that he was good enough... and of course, to preserve his own hide, too, but...

He swallows, slowly, bows at the mention of his name, taking the lead in the careful, respectful motions, bowing low... and squeezing Taliesin's hand, nudging him with a hip to try and redirect his attention to his grandfather.

RE: Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
As they walked toward the daze where Niall waited the small retinue would come t o see the entirety of the grand mansion estate of the Raven Lord. This was in fact one of many estates owned and controlled by the Raven portion of the Gentry Lane. Several trees imported from the Great Coill themselves were planted in carefully laid copses along the grounds giving the impression of small forests or parks existing on the ground. The large open field that stood before the grand stone mansion was clear cut and filled with warriors practicing combat. All were of various ages from young children (boys and girls) dressed in leather practice armor, to pull bronze armored charioteers checking their horses for the day.

Niall was arrayed in the great raven feather mantle that was worn by the ruling Fine of the Clann. Derdriu who was standing with her fellow Pretanii was watching the entire scene play out as the two red heads traveling with her supposed sister. Niall caught a quick gesture from the girl and shook his head, the girl was curious if she was suppose to get closer. Her father closed his hand and then made a sharp gesture back to her. No she was to wait.

"Welcome Seren, Danu with you and your guests. Welcome to the estate of the Raven and my home in the City of Mists. Let me introduce to you the House of Blackbird so that we are all aware of each other." He quickly placed his right hand to his lips and blew a shrill whistle. For a moment the fighting on the field continued and then stopped. The warriors began to congregate toward the front of the stone mansion whit its great barred windows as their leader called them all to attention.

Several figures broke out of the crowd and made their way over toward as Derdrui broke away from her small unit of warriors and came to stand near her father. Eight men and boys soon joined her as three small little girls appeared. Then a young woman carrying a babe sat beside one of the men.

"Lets see if I can cover this all. I believe...Danu and ancestors son you have your wife and grandsons here too? Sheesh!" he said to his oldest.

"Seren you didn't know her but you had an older sister named Grainne. Her brothers are standing beside me *he indicated the tall slightly red hair men all wearing bronze armor* the one with the wife is Cathal and that is his latest child, whose yet to see her name day. His younger brothers are Colm and Cahir. Both are warriors who now help with the rule of the counties under family control. Colm is a Laoch who now defends your cousin Caitria who is the Flaith of the Ua Morrigan.

Their mother was my first love, who was slain by a Badb extremist, her name was Bride, a commoner of Nemain stock. The Septs didn't like our union but we didn't care."

He then walked over and took Derdriu's hand led her forward. Her painted face was slick with blue paint and she wore a clocha over a nearly bare chest thick with leather armor. The cloak was covered in designs depicting a rearing bear.

"This is Derdriu of the Ua Eriu from over the Highmists," he began as the girl cut him off.

"The red hairs, we have seen like them before crawling in our lands. Silly red hairs always trying to move bad stone through lands of Clann Bear!" she chuckled as Niall gave her a quick glare.

"And she has a sick sense of humor." He replied as he indicated then he glanced over at a young man standing away from Derdriu, and then a moment afterward he noted a late coming another slight red haired lad who was dressed in a druid's outfit. "That be Dermuid your older brother who has started studying the ways of the Draoi."

"The two golden eyed brats are Cadoc and Bran are charioteers in training. Their mother was a lovely Flidais woman who I knew during the Clann War and before I met your mother to an extent. We ended up being stuck together for a few years in a small county during a lengthy siege against Clann Wolf. Their older brothers were killed in an assault by the Flidais as they hunted Elen for being a blood-traitor. I was able to get them out later on."

The two brothers looked at each other and then said to themselves, "Lugh? Sun kid blood? Oi oi the in-laws are going to love this one eh?" as Niall then snapped a glare at them.

That is when Niall noticed Rozenwyn looking at him as he walked over to two small little girls slight older than Seren's own children who were hanging back behind the crowd of his children.

"These are your nieces, Grainne's children, Aislin and Nuala. If you wish your children can play with them since they are free from training today." He smiled as he encouraged the two smaller children to walk over to the inquiring look of his blond haired grandchild.

"I apologize for the mess today. You decided on a day when the other Septs are complaining about a lack of fighting going on. You'd think we would learn to not like a good bit of blood letting, but that's what you get when your ancestors are the Scald Crows. Now come this way we are preparing food in the back for the day." The man said as he began to walk back toward the area behind the great mansion which appeared to be a small Druid's Grove among the trees.

RE: Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
The smile of the golden haired woman reflected that of her mother as her father welcomed herself and her family, and then proceeded to begin introductions. And quite a number of them there were to make as she watched the people who gathered around. She greeted each with a small bow and polite words as each was named, being sure to memorise faces to names, though some would be difficult to forget. Derdriu, for instance, stood out clearly, not just from the paint but also for her comments regarding Aedan and Abbey. Seren's smile didn't falter, but her green eyes flashed slightly for a brief moment.

Seren's calm gaze slid across to her apparent Flidais brothers as well when they spoke and her smile morphed into something more of a dark grin, "Oh now, don't pretend that they don't know who you're related to as the sons of the former High Queen's past consort." She responded with ease, a light tone in her voice that could have been taken as playful jest, as there was no offence in their words, only truth really.

The woman's attention returned to her father as he introduced two younger children, her nieces, and she smiled warmly at them before glancing back at her own children. She had to keep from chuckling as Taliesin seemed to be fascinated by everything, especially the warriors. She noticed the way Rozenwyn watched between the two young girls and her grandfather though and held a hand out to the girl, who released her father and stepped forward.

"I am sure they would love to play, though I think Rozen wishes to know her grandfather as well," Seren's gaze shifted to Niall, "She is an intelligent and curious girl, rather advanced in her training as mother and I were at her age." She ran her fingers idly through the golden and red streaked waves of her daughter's hair as Rozenwyn continued to study the Raven Chieftain.

"Taliesin is not yet as disciplined, but he has a strong heart and fiery spirit," Seren smirked back at her son who was now grinning at his two new cousins brightly with a cheeky glint. "Do not fret over messes and whatnot though, I have a feeling that a number of the Clanns are beginning to feel unsettled in recent times," She spoke almost cryptically, as she considered some of the dealings she and her mother had recently. Seren was sure that much of it was to do with the upcoming elections later in the year.

As Niall began to lead them off, Seren offered her arm out for Aedan to take and gestured that he could let go of Taliesin's hand for now since it seemed that the boy was eager to play with his cousins. Rozenwyn stayed close to her parents, though moved even closer to her grandfather as they all walked, and eventually reached up to clasp at his hand.

"Mathair sends her greetings, by the way," Seren mentioned casually as they walked, though her gaze slid across toward her father in order to study him as she spoke, "She returned home swiftly from some treasure hunt I believe she is assisting one of your men with this morning. Made haste back to the city after she received word that I would be arriving with the children. I also heard a rumour that you went to visit her the other week. I hope all is well between you?"

RE: Thicker Than Water (Niall, Aedan, Abbey, kidletts)
Abbey smiled, faintly, as they walked, and continued to examine the area, studying everything – taking in the little chariots, the practice armor, and the Pretanii… She folded her hands, however, far more deft at the ways of social grace than her brother, despite their mutual upbringing.

Her eyes followed the warriors, examined the eight men and boys, the three little girls and Derdriu, as they came to stand next to Niall, and the woman with the babe in her arms, eyes taking in their details, and listened intently to Niall’s words, though her eyes refocused on Derdriu as she stepped forwards, looking more than a little intrigued – and easily keeps the smirk that threatens to slide over her face at Derdriu’s comment of ‘silly red hairs’… ah, there weren’t too many red-heads in smiling iron, after all… though she wouldn’t put it past some of their competitors to be travelling that way, either… if they’d been spotted… mmm. It was worth later investigation.

The boys, with their golden eyes, she wasn’t concerned of – flashed quick smile their way – reminded her of the three back at the Inn, a bit, wondering if they were prone to half as much trouble as Corrigan… or near as spoiled as Dugan had turned out to be, over the years…

She followed along, stepping in line next to Seren, so that she and her brother are both at her sides, as they followed Niall, her pace light and easy - the walk of someone who was where they should be...and where else would she be, after all?
